Meaning
Nervous system activation increases the heart rate, respiration and alertness to prepare the body for high intensity action. In the context of a founder, sympathetic elevation is the physiological state that accompanies a major pitch, a product launch or a sudden market shift. This system governs the mobilization of internal resources to meet a perceived threat or opportunity.
It stops being useful and starts being destructive when the system remains elevated for days or weeks at a time.
Arousal Baseline
The body is designed to return to a calm state once a challenge has been met. However, many founders experience a shift where the state of sympathetic elevation becomes their new normal. This means they are always in a state of fight or flight, even when they are at home or trying to sleep.
This high baseline drains the capacity for calm, analytical thinking and replaces it with a bias toward quick, reactive movements.
Energy Expenditure
Running the body at this speed costs a tremendous amount in terms of calories and mental attention. Because sympathetic elevation prioritizes short-term survival, it shuts down the parts of the brain responsible for long-term planning and empathy. The founder may find themselves being more irritable and less able to see the big picture.
This tax on capacity is often the first sign that the individual is heading toward a period of exhaustion.
Homeostatic Threshold
Returning to a neutral state requires a deliberate effort to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system. Activities like slow breathing, physical exercise or total silence can help lower the elevation. If these triggers are not used, the system will eventually hit a wall where it can no longer maintain the high speed.
This results in a sudden drop in energy and mood that can last for several days.
