External support structures reduce the amount of energy an individual must spend on basic survival and operational tasks. A metabolic subsidy allows a founder to direct more of their internal resources toward the high level strategic goals of the company. This transfer of load occurs when a partner, a service or a system takes over the cognitive or physical labor of daily life.

The presence of a support system acts as a battery for the founder’s own capacity. A metabolic subsidy works by removing the need for the person to think about mundane details like meals, travel or scheduling. This allows the person to remain in a focused state for longer periods.
The subsidy is effective only if the founder trusts the system to perform without supervision.
